Open Pledge to Report on the Domestic Implementation of International Humanitarian Law

Actions taken:

  • In 2020, New Zealand Red Cross agreed with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade that if MFAT colleagues would draft this report, NZRC would develop the event to launch it. NZRC and MFAT attended international seminars about the process and agreed the most appropriate frameworks and processes. NZRC provided early research support for the report in 2020 and 2021 through interns. The report has been produced by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in consultation and with contributions from New Zealand Red Cross and the New Zealand National Committee on IHL
  • New Zealand will publish Aotearoa New Zealand’s Voluntary Report on the Domestic Implementation of IHL ahead of the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The report will be hosted on the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
  • New Zealand Red Cross co-hosting an event in August 2024 at the New Zealand Parliament with the Prime Minister Hon Christopher Luxon to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. The event will also serve as the launch for the Government’s voluntary report.
  • New Zealand is a long-standing supporter of the rule of law and the international rules-based system, which includes compliance with the principles of IHL. The report will record New Zealand’s record of compliance with IHL and improve and encourage the understanding of IHL in New Zealand as well as offshore.
