Mesures prises:
(PLEDGE 2)
The Republic of Korea (ROK) pledged to join international efforts to prevent and respond to sexual and gender based violence in armed conflicts including support for victims and survivors, through the new initiative of “Action with Women and Peace (AWP)” launched in 2018.
(IMPLEMENTATION)
In 2018, the Republic of Korea launched the “Action with Women and Peace” initiative to enhance its international contribution to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.
International Conference on AWP
Since 2019, the ROK has hosted the annual ‘International Conference on Action with Women and Peace’ with the aim of generating awareness of sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) in armed conflicts. To this end, the conferences have dealt with a range of topics such as ‘Global Partnership to combat sexual violence in conflict’ and, ‘Strengthening women’s role and leadership in building and sustaining peace, with the survivor-centered approach’. In particular, the 5th Conference in 2023 saw more than 200 participants from governments, international organizations and civil society, engaging in in-depth discussions on advancing the WPS agenda in the Security Council. During the event, the ROK reaffirmed its commitment to the WPS agenda while serving as a Security Council member for 2024-25.
Advisory Committee
Furthermore, in 2019, the ROK established the Advisory Committee comprising experts in human rights, gender equality, sexual violence in conflict, development cooperation, and multilateral diplomacy, and representatives from civil society organizations. This committee fosters close cooperation with relevant civil sectors in terms of SGBV and advances the ROK’s policies through the reflection of diverse perspectives and professional advice.
Action with Women and Peace Fund
In 2024, the ROK launched a $2 million ‘Action with Women and Peace Fund’. The fund aims to make a significant impact in conflict zones beyond the Security Council, protecting women in conflict and supporting their participation in peace activities. The ROK is committed to strengthening its efforts to prevent and respond to sexual and gender based violence in armed conflicts.
