Engagement to reduce climate change impacts

A) Objectives of the pledge:

Pursuant to the Paris Climate Agreement signed by 195 countries,

In fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations, especially SDG 13 on climate change, and the commitment to leave no one behind the 2030 Agenda and the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit,

Considering that climate change has been identified by the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies as one of the main challenges of the next decade in the 2030 Strategy,

Recalling that the statutory meetings of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement have consistently addressed climate change concerns since 1999, by reaffirming in Resolution 1 of the XXX International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent of 2007 our commitment to address the humanitarian consequences of environmental degradation and climate change,

Taking into account that climate change mainly affects the most vulnerable groups and leading to the increase and severity of humanitarian crises and population movements,

Recognizing that the involvement of volunteering, citizenship and education are essential elements of the response to climate change,

Taking into account the Just Transition Strategy (Katowice Climate Summit, Poland, December 2018), which places particular emphasis on the creation of Green and Decent Jobs in the rural world,

Recognizing that radical transformations are urgently needed to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement, to achieve carbon neutrality and to limit global warming “to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 ºC above pre-industrial levels”,

Commit ourselves, by the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in 2023, to contribute to:

  • CALCULATE our carbon footprint and register it with the relevant organizations.
  • REDUCE, establishing a plan that will affect all areas of the organization with a 45% reduction in emissions by 2030
  • COMPENSATE CO2 emitted reaching Climate neutrality in 2050

B) Action plan:

  • We will count on the massive participation of volunteers and citizens
  • We will train in the so-called “green jobs”
  • We will contribute to the creation of “green jobs”
  • We will focus our action on the most depopulated rural areas with the aim of not leaving anyone behind
  • Working for energy poverty reduction
  • We will carry out a reforestation plan to offset our CO2 emissions
  • We will collaborate among National Societies to strengthen disaster and crisis risk management related to climate change

C) Indicators for measuring progress:

  • participation of xxx volunteers
  • xxx people trained in green jobs
  • implementation of xx actions in rural areas
  • reforestation of xx hectares
  • xx collaborative actions undertaken with other National Societies

D) Resource implications:

Human resources (salaried staff and volunteers)

Economic resources to develop the different actions
