Actions Taken:
Formed a new HS Data Strategy Team, led by a Sr Director (Bret Dennis) and staffed by two Data Analysts (Jon Fain and Chelsea Patti) and project-based volunteer data analysts and data scientists. They work as trusted advisors across all HS lines of service and HS data domains. Their projects range from data governance, integration, automation, dictionary, pipelines, transformation, and visualization.
Established a formal HS Data Dictionary for major data domains and incorporated data definition as part of all new system projects.
Established formal data capability mapping for all major HS systems so we can identify the most important opportunities for action and measure progress over time.
Formal data governance management encompassing data stewardship, protection of PII, data classification reviews and documentation, and data usage and sharing rules.
Joining the ARC-wide AI governance council to review use cases, technologies, best practices for ethical and secure use, etc.
Guidance on PowerBI best practices for effectiveness and accessibility and efficient use of capacity.
Establishing an API-first strategy for eliminating fragile point-to-point integrations and net new projects.
An HS-wide initiative to eliminate the use of flat files as backend data stores for business user-created applications and move to secure enterprise data stores.
Participating in Data Literacy training and achieving yellow and green belt certifications.
Consulting and solving selected challenging use cases for generating actionable insight from analytics. For example, when there is complex data transformation or mapping issues involved.
Challenges Encountered:
Navigating multiple integration platform options within ARC for each use case
HS is not yet on the top of the priority list for the large enterprise data warehouse modernization project (Biomed is the current priority). So we are mostly addressing opportunities within our direct control and getting our environment ready for adoption.
The introduction of new privacy compliance standards.
Capacity for business users to engage with us on addressing data-related projects and opportunities for improvement.
Concrete Examples:
Including multiple documents.
