Gender, Inclusion and Diversity has increasingly become a topic on the agenda of the Austrian Red Cross. Progress has been achieved in different strategic and operational areas:
Gender, in particular the broader topic of diversity has been included in the institutional national Strategy 2030 of the Austrian RC. The development of a dedicated Inclusion and Diversity framework was formulated as one implementation measure of Strategy 2030.
Hence, the strategic framework was drafted and adopted by all organizational levels (from HQ to regional branches) through the conference of the members of the national management board. A dedicated working group has the mandate to propose implementing measures throughout the organization.Female leadership is not explicitly mentioned in the framework. However, there are ideas to enhance female volunteer leadership. Female representation has been increased in the national governing board. Gender parity was reached at the Heads of department level, four out of eight leaders at this level are female.
Inclusion in operational plans:
The international department is holding Inclusion, gender and diversity briefings for every delegate and has developed a inclusive language and comms guide for field and surge personell.Safeguarding concept note was developed

In terms of training and capacity building, a first step to enhance awareness and knowledge about the topic was taken in spring 2024: Together with the PGI experts from the IFRC Regional Office in Budapest, Austrian Red Cross hosted PGI basic training and a ToT workshop. 24 staff members and volunteers participated.
With the Ministry of Social Affairs, a network was started with the aim to address harassment issues in the organization and in the broader social system. A safeguarding concept note was developed.
The Youth Red Cross is leading on a process with the aim to create more awareness among the volunteers of the Austrian RC.
