Report on pledge – Addressing education-related humanitarian needs

Mesures prises:

Adopted measures to reflect our commitment to the pledge:

Creation of a Master Professional in “Pedagogical Approaches to Humanitarian Education” (PATHE) in collaboration with the University College of Teachers Education of Lower Austria, in Austria.

This international postgraduate, part-time university course – offered at a bachelor’s level or equivalent- equips students with didactic competencies to raise awareness among children and adolescents about humanitarian issues, foster their capacity for independent opinion formation, and enhance their ability to take action.

It is scheduled to commence in 2025 with the support of the Swiss Confederation and the University College of Teachers Education of Zug, Switzerland.

Creation of a Reference Center in Humanitarian Education

Austrian Red Cross is in the process of establishing a Reference Center for Humanitarian Education, scheduled to begin operations in 2025. This Center will serve as a worldwide hub, advocating for the importance, relevance, and accessibility of Humanitarian Education in collaboration with the IFRC, the RC/RC Movement, the Swiss Confederation, universities, and foundations.

Our objectives encompass various aspects:

• To strengthen partnerships within and outside the Movement to support existing or new HE work of National Societies
• To enable National Societies to access to a growing body of research on humanitarian education, the cultivation of emotional skills and social competencies, and effective teaching methodologies.
• To offer adequate training opportunities that meet the depth and breadth required by the National Societies covering humanitarian education, emotional skills, and social competencies, ranging from formal workshops to online webinars.
• To amplify the efforts of the National Societies by raising awareness of Humanitarian Education by ensuring maximum exposure of the Reference Center

By continuing to prioritize humanitarian education, the Austrian Red Cross aims to contribute to the realization of the pledge and the broader goal of ensuring access to quality humanitarian education for all.
