Building resilience in a changing climate

Mesures prises:

The President of the Bulgarian Red Cross is a member of the Consultative Council for supporting the Council of Ministers in forming the state policy in the field of disaster protection. The Consultative Council acts as a National Platform for disaster risk reduction of the Republic of Bulgaria. The Council continues the efforts of the country in this field since 1990 when International Decade for Disaster Risk Reduction was launched. Bulgarian RC Director General is a member of the Permanent National Coordination Group at the Council and actively participates in the design and implementation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy, and in drafting the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy with its Action Plan, taking into account the international approach to ensuring coherence of disaster risk reduction policies, adaptation to climate change and sustainable development under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations SDGs 2030. The Bulgarian RC is part of the National Expert Committee on Climate Change which is an advisory body to the Ministry of Environment and Water – responsible for the conduct of the overall state policy on climate change mitigation.

The NS regularly shares public updates on climate related events, such as extreme temperatures (heatwaves, severe winter conditions) and often runs at community level distribution campaigns, e.g. providing potable water to people, blood pressure measurement and so on. Back in 2016, The Bulgarian RC held a round-table on “climate change and its impact on vulnerable groups”, which brought together a variety of experts from partnering institutions / organizations in the country.

Bulgarian Red Cross Youth has developed an interactive game “Recycle with us” created by the volunteers of the BRCY Regional branch of Burgas to promote responsible attitude of children and young people towards nature and the environment. The game is composed by several “levels” that depict various contaminated or affected by climate change places such as Forests, Water sources, Urban settings, etc. during which the children have to carry out tasks, related to Ecology, climate responsible behavior, recycling, etc.

For a course of 3 years more than 50 “Recycle with us” workshops were carried out, including an overall of 800 children joined only in the city and region of Burgas.
