Report on pledge – Humanitarian Effects of Nuclear Weapons

الإجراءات المتخذة:

Achieving a world free from the threat of nuclear weapons is a long-standing priority for Ireland.

Ireland, across bilateral and multilateral fora, continues to highlight the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons. This was most recently discussed at the Second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in New York in December 2023, where Ireland served as Vice-President. In 2024, Ireland continues to serve as co-facilitator, alongside Thailand, on complementarity between the TPNW and Nuclear Non-Proliferation (NPT). In this role, Ireland has convened a number of events focusing on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons, including one which will take place at the Second Preparatory Committee to the Review Conference of the NPT in July 2024.

We also continue to advance work on this as part of the New Agenda Coalition and provide funding to a variety of organisations to carry out work to highlight the increasing urgency of achieving real progress on agreed obligations towards nuclear disarmament.

Throughout our disarmament work, Ireland continues to underline the importance of having gender-responsive approaches to disarmament policy and arms control.
