Actions taken:

At the SRC Young Leaders Forum 2020, the SRC Delegate for International Humanitarian Law / Dissemination provided information on the Pledge and motivated the participants to get involved in its implementation as well as spread the word within their respective communities. A newly formed working group of young volunteers (WG “Youth Ban the Bombs”), supported by the SRC Headquarters, was subsequently involved in the planning and implementation of a social media campaign to mark the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The corresponding contributions with video statements by young volunteers, calling on the Swiss Federal Council to sign the TPNW, were broadcast on the SRC channels in August 2020 (youtube, Instagram); in addition, contributions were made to the SRC youth magazine “Ready” (2/2020) as well as the SRC magazine “Humanité” (3/2020). In the following years, the topic was taken up several times on SRC social media channels, e.g. on the occasion of the TPNW coming into force (Instagram, LinkedIn) or the release of the film “Oppenheimer”(TikTok). However, after the initial phase and the realization of the social media campaign mentioned above, it was a challenge to motivate the SRC youth to plan and carry out further activities.

In June 2024, a campaign will be launched in Switzerland for a popular initiative in favor of signing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The popular initiative offers the SRC the opportunity to continue and reaffirm the efforts it has already made in the public and political arena for Switzerland to sign the TPNW. The communication strategy for the SRC’s position will be implemented in close coordination with the SRC Youth, which will be actively involved in our communication activities.
