Promotion and Dissemination of International Humanitarian Law

Actions taken:

In accordance with its status as the voluntary aid society auxiliary to the German authorities in the humanitarian field, the German Red Cross disseminates international humanitarian law (IHL), assists its government in disseminating IHL and takes initiatives in this respect. The German Red Cross and German authorities have continued and deepened their cooperation in the field of IHL dissemination and promotion, in particular in the context of the German National IHL Committee.  They closely collaborate in updating a report on the national implementation of IHL in Germany and have jointly organized various high-level events related to the 70th anniversary of the 1949 Geneva Conventions in 2019. A third, revised and enlarged edition of “Documents on International Humanitarian Law” (a bilingual German/English text edition) was published as a joint publication of the Federal Foreign Office, the German Red Cross, and the Federal Ministry of Defence in 2016. The Federal Ministry of Defence and the German Red Cross have pursued their exchange on matters of common interest and concern within their annual conference of legal advisers of the armed force and of the Red Cross.
