Dead migrants and information to their families

Actions taken:

Following the Mapping Survey “Deceased migrants and information to their families”, the Bulgarian Red Cross Tracing Service undertook an extensive mapping exercise between November and December 2017 conducted jointly with an ICRC forensic specialist.  As suggested, the purpose of the mapping was to thoroughly understand the legal and administrative process and procedures for (a) deceased migrants’ registration; (b) identification procedures; (c) communication with the families. Therefore, representatives of the NS conducted a series of meetings with public authorities, including District Police Directorate, Prosecutor’s Office, Research Institute of Forensics, city morgues. This allowed the NS to better identify roles and responsibilities at national level when working on cases of deceased migrants, as well as to open a dialogue with experts at different institutions, and maintain contact with them.
