This pledge has prompted discussions on how we can increase opportunities for substantive IHL discussions between Australian Red Cross and the Australian Government.
In particular, while the National IHL Committee has continued to meet 3-4 times per year, it was recently agreed that the meetings would include more substantive and open discussions on a range of emerging IHL topics of interest to Committee members. In addition, Australian Red Cross and Government members of the Committee have met to discuss ways to enliven and strengthen the Committee to position it as a more integral forum for confidential dialogue on IHL implementation and contemporary IHL issues.
In addition, our ongoing engagement on implementation of IHL has continued. Key examples include:
- The Health Care in danger domestic legislative review project (see Australian Red Cross’ report on Resolution 4: Health Care in Danger for more details);
- Australian Red Cross continues to appreciate constructive opportunities to engage with Government, particularly the Attorney-General’s department, on new legislation that relates to IHL. In recent years that has been almost exclusively new counter-terrorism legislative amendments;
- Australian Red Cross also continues to monitor the use of the Red Cross emblem.
