Pledge – Day of Remembrance

New Zealand Red Cross hereby pledges:

  • On 17 December 1996, six ICRC delegates, many on loan from National Societies, were assassinated at the ICRC hospital in the Chechen village of Novye Atagi Over the years, this has come to be a day to remember and honour all International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement personnel killed or injured while performing their vital humanitarian work.
  • The New Zealand Red Cross pledges to:
  • Declare December 17 a Day of Remembrance for those within the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement who have lost their lives or been seriously injured in the course of their humanitarian duties. Tell the stories of those who have lost their lives so that they are not forgotten.
  • Continue to promote awareness and understanding of IHL and in particular the protections afforded to humanitarian workers in times of armed conflict

 

Proposed evaluation criteria

a. Day of Remembrance observed and commemorations held on 17 December each year

Actions to date:

  • Following membership-led observations at local level in 2016, the NZRC National Board has committed to providing the lead in once again marking this important day in an appropriate way in 2017.
  • The 2018 promotional activities included:
    • Social media post
    • Release of people leaders / presenters tool kit with ideas and options for how to recognise this important date.
    • RedNet content posted.
  • In relation to the promotion of IHL the Communications, Marketing and Fundraising Department have contributed via:
    • Involvement in the 2018 IHL moot competition
    • Development of funding applications (IHL Moot)
    • Significant involvement in the promotion of the IHL Youth competition
