As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council Slovenia draws special attention to the protection of civilians in armed conflicts and in this respect also to the protection of humanitarian and medical personnel. Slovenia in its statements underlines the need and importance of respect and implementation of IHL rules on the protection of humanitarian and medical personnel for civilians alongside with implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2286.
The Ministry of Defence has also started drafting a new regulation to comprehensively regulate the use of the Red Cross insignia in the Slovenian Armed Forces, including the protection of medical and religious personnel.
The protection of humanitarian and medical personnel is an integral part of international humanitarian law; members of the Slovenian Armed Forces and officials of the Ministry of Defence – both legal experts and personnel deployed on international operations and missions – receive training in this area.
