Has your government engaged with the National Society on the implementation of “Principles and Rules for Red Cross and Red Crescent?

Yes

If yes, please describe the
activities undertaken:

During the reporting period, the Australian Government has worked with the ARC (ARC) to save lives, alleviate suffering and enhance human dignity, especially in situations of conflict, natural disasters and other humanitarian crises in line with the principles and Rules for Red Cross and Red Crescent Humanitarian Assistance. These Principles and Rules encompass preparedness for response, disaster relief and early recovery activities. The Australian Government has supported the ARC in strengthening organisational, coordination and delivery capacities of National Societies across the Indo-Pacific region, to respond to the increasing number and complexity of disasters and the growing number of vulnerable people. For example, through Australian Government funding the ARC have: developed community level Disaster Mitigation Plans in Papua New Guinea; conducted disaster preparedness activities for the Solomon Islands Red Cross, government agencies and INGOs (including exercises and emergency operation training); and supported the development of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Fiji Red Cross Society (RCS) and National Disaster Management Office agreeing that the Fiji RCS will complete initial damage assessments during a disaster response. The Australian Government has also contributed to the understanding and uptake of International Disaster Law and International Humanitarian Law by supporting the ARC in hosting the first ever Asia-Pacific Regional Disaster Law Field School in 2017. The Australian Government and the ARC hold an Annual High Level Dialogue to discuss the broader partnership, including issues around improved coordination of international response efforts and commitments made at the World Humanitarian Summit. Both parties have also participated in joint ‘lessons learned’ meetings to strengthen coordination efforts during a crisis response, including the Sulawesi earthquake and the Rohingya response.
