A) Objectives of the pledge:
Each signing State and National Society pledges to continue the cooperation with each other and other interested States and Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies in all matters related to the universalisation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and its underlying rationale of preventing the unacceptable humanitarian and environmental risks and consequences of nuclear weapons. This includes outreach on signature and ratification of the Treaty as well as raising awareness about these important issues, both at the national and at the international level.
B) Action plan:
Each signing State and National Society will use all opportunities for raising awareness of this issue, and cooperate closely with other interested States and Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies. Concrete initiatives will be taken to work towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
Austria will continue to table the Resolutions „Humanitarian Consequences of Nuclear Weapons“ (as it has done since 2015) and “Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons” (as it has done since 2017) in the United Nations General Assembly. Each signing State and National Society will strive to support these resolutions and conduct outreach to increase support for their adoption.
C) Indicators for measuring progress:
- Number of opportunities used for awareness raising;
- Number of countries signing and/or ratifying the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons;
- Number of votes cast in favour of the above-mentioned resolutions.
D) Resource implications:
The financial and human resources needed for the above-mentioned measures will be provided by each signing State and National Society.
