Implementation of Resolutions and Pledges from the 32nd RCRC International Conference (1)

Actions taken:

  1. The Republic of Korea has played an active part in regional cooperation on disaster preparedness and response. As part of those activities, the ROK has attended the annual ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Inter-sessional Meeting on Disaster Relief as well as the ARF Disaster Relief Exercise held in Malaysia in 2015. In particular, the ROK and Thailand jointly held the ARF Inter-sessional Meeting on Disaster Relief in 2018, which discussed strengthening capacity for disaster preparedness, response, and resilience. Furthermore, in order to provide emergency relief in the case of sudden-onset of disasters such as earthquakes and floods, the ROK dispatched its Korean Disaster Relief Team (KDRT) to Nepal in 2015, and Laos in 2018.
  2. In an effort to keep up with the global discourse on how to better respond to growing humanitarian needs, the ROK revised in 2019 its “Humanitarian Assistance Strategy,” originally drafted in 2015. Under this strategy, the ROK will continue to scale up the ROK’s humanitarian funding, as well as expand capacity and resilience building measures for the most vulnerable groups, including women, children, and refugees. Furthermore, acknowledging the importance of concerted actions to relieve the suffering of the people in humanitarian crises, the ROK has decided to join the Grand Bargain, the group of major donors and humanitarian organizations. Also, the ROK has increased its support for the advanced humanitarian funding mechanisms such as Country-Based Pooled Funds (CBPFs) and Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), managed by the UN OCHA.
