Youth Engagement for a Better World

Actions taken:

Bulgarian Red Cross Youth’s Development fund for youth activities is one of the most successful internal financial support mechanisms, which is realized within three years period.

  1. It was comprised by a Small grants application process, entirely developed and implemented by young volunteers (14 – 29 years).
  2. Through this mechanism Bulgarian Red Cross Youth (BRCY) was able to include volunteers in the entire process of planning, applying, implementing and reporting of the small grants. Using this participatory approach, the BRCY has generated even more responsible attitude on the side of volunteers towards the implementation of activities since they were able to design and carry out their own ideas and innovative activities. Feeling empowered and owning their projects, young volunteers increased their capacity for developing and working on future and bigger projects.
  3. The simplified process of applying and youth-friendly reporting resulted in 146 submitted applications and overall of 75 funded projects for a three years period.

Challenge: How to encourage the continuous exchange of already successful practices and training materials, developed within the mechanism.

Quote – “It is extremely motivating for the volunteers to participate in the Development fund for youth activities. The planning and development of their own ideas, the trainings, the public campaigns and the workshops with different groups of children have inspired many and have achieved and surpassed the expected results. “- Project report of the Bulgarian Red Cross Youth – Targovishte Regional Branch.
