Youth and Humanitarian Perspectives for an Agenda on Nuclear Disarmament

Actions taken:

On 26 September 2019, the Italian RC launched its advocacy campaign for nuclear disarmament called “Nuclear Experience” aiming at raising awareness on the devastating humanitarian consequences resulting from any use of nuclear weapons and, ultimately, at having Italy ratifying the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

Within this framework, the main activities carried out by the Italian RC in relation to this pledge have included:

  • Participation in the Youth Action Forum on nuclear weapons of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
  • Hearing at the Permanent Committee on Human Rights in the World of the III Commission (Foreign and Community Affairs) of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament
  • Social media campaigns and outreach/awareness activities carried out in several Italian municipalities in collaboration with the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), particularly on 26 September – the international day for the elimination of nuclear weapons
  • Launch of the virtual library on the Italian RC website, including relevant resources on the devastating consequences of nuclear weapons
  • Launch of a blog and podcast linked to the “Nuclear Experience” campaign on nuclear disarmament, which have hosted contributions from academics, practitioners and the ICRC
  • Inclusion in the Italian RC catalogue of internal training courses of a specialization course on the “Nuclear Experience” campaign, that is to say on nuclear disarmament
  • Inclusion of the “Nuclear Experience” project within the 3-year MoU (2022-2024) between the Italian RC and the Ministry of Education
  • Joint advocacy initiatives with other NSs directed to our respective authorities and followed, in some cases, by public communication (e.g. to ask the Italian government to participate as observer in the Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW held in Vienna in 2022 and in New York in 2023, or to take concrete steps towards nuclear disarmament at the G7 meeting in Hiroshima in May 2023)
  • Participation in the 1MSP to the TPNW held in June 2022 in Vienna as well as in the related Nuclear Ban Week
  • Participation in the NukExpo event in Oslo on 26 April 2024 co-organized by the Norwegian RC
