Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

Actions taken:

In 2016 Bulgarian Red Cross Youth launched an initiative, called “School for Humanity”, during which there were discussions and views were gathered as well as opinions from representatives of institutions, citizens, experts and young people on the issues of migration, discrimination and humanity.

Young volunteers, children, politicians, experts and journalists were able to debate on pressing topics such as migration, discrimination, racism, radicalization, principles, values and humanity in the school’s “classroom”. The event resulted in a great success and managed to put the Fundamental principles on the agenda in Bulgaria.

Based on this experience Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) organized a second edition of the School in 2019. For several months, volunteers from the Bulgarian Youth Red Cross from all over the country have been looking for different and inspiring people in their local communities. The stories they discovered were a part of an interactive exhibition – a key element of the School for Humanity.

During “The School for Humanity” 2.0 panelists shared many different stories on challenges and success of social inclusion, including the Danish Ambassador in Bulgaria; The chair of the Representation office of the European commission in Bulgaria; the psychologist of the Sofia prison; professionals working with LGBTQI+ communities, with HIV positive people, and a panelist with a refugee background, living in Bulgaria.

At the end of the event, the stories and opinions of the participants – painted, written and spoken, were united in the Little Online Book of Humanity, which will be shared and popularized among partners and institutions.
