Auxiliary Role

A) Objectives of the pledge:

For the years 2016 – 2019, building upon our positive long-term partnership and ongoing commitment to strengthen the role of Australian Red Cross as an auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field (Resolution 2, 30th IC 2007; Resolution 4, 31st IC 2011), the Australian Government and Australian Red Cross hereby pledge to:

    • Maintain a dialogue to consolidate a joint understanding of the specific and distinctive partnership established by the auxiliary role in the Australian context at all levels, recognising that it entails mutual responsibilities and benefits through which the State and the National Society agree on the areas in which the latter supplements for public humanitarian services.

B) Action plan:

    • Commence an annual dialogue and other activities as appropriate between the Australian Government and Australian Red Cross specifically on the auxiliary role and its practical application in the humanitarian field in the Australian context.

    • Maintain a regular dialogue between the Australian Government and Australian Red Cross on areas of collaboration where the benefits of the auxiliary role contribute to the prevention and alleviation of suffering.

    • Ensure that the Australian Government and Australian Red Cross understand and support the nature and importance of the auxiliary role.
