Dialogue on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons

A) Objectives of the pledge:

The Belgian authorities and Belgian Red Cross are deeply concerned about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons. They recognize the need to keep raising awareness on this issue among the relevant publics and they will take appropriate actions for that purpose. They believe that these actions can help foster a global culture of peace and security. They are convinced that every effort should be made to avoid the use of nuclear weapons. They reaffirm the need to remind all relevant actors of their obligation to comply at all times with applicable international law, including international humanitarian law. Moreover, the Belgian authorities and the Belgian Red Cross pledge to continue their dialogue on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons during regular meetings in order to further the shared objective of a world without nuclear weapons.

B) Action plan:

    • The Belgian authorities and Belgian Red Cross continue to exchange information and positions before and after international meetings concerning (the humanitarian consequences of the use of) nuclear weapons, during bilateral meetings.

    • The Belgian Red Cross continues to express the Movement’s concerns and position on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons in trainings and events.

    • The Belgian authorities continue to release statements or join multinational statements on the importance of raising awareness on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons, in the framework of international fora.
